This spring and early summer, this was my favourite song to play, and Childhood Home was my favourite album. It instilled hope and courage in me to hear this song and realize the darkness, broken relationships, and mental breakdowns Ben Harper has been through. And yet he sees the beauty in life and keeps the faith strong like a light in dark places. It was extra special for him to collaborate with his mother, as her strength has likely also been tested through Harper's experiences. Seeing a family member going through mental illness is not easy and when the person no longer has a sense of who they are or even what their name is, it is emotionally wrenching. Sometimes I think it is harder for the loved ones than for the one who suffers a mental breakdown. Harper sings "how beautiful to be free from my name, and all those who lay claim." I can understand what he means somewhat. At least I can imagine it. This is a powerful song on a beautifully lyrical album that speaks to the resiliency and courage of both Harpers. They create beauty out of dark times and places, and they sing of beauty and a faith that continues to believe despite the shadows and struggles.
"How Could We Not Believe"
(with Ellen Harper)
Was so beautiful how could we not believe
So beautiful how could we not believe
We love
We grieve
Then all seek our reprieve
So beautiful how could we not believe
Was so beautiful we had to stand aside
So beautiful we had to stand aside
We had to stand aside
With our arms open wide
So beautiful we had to stand aside
Was so beautiful we had to close our eyes
So beautiful we had to close our eyes
And listen to the sound
It could be heard miles around
So beautiful we had to close our eyes
So beautiful to be free from my name
So beautiful to be free from my name
To be free from my name
And all those who lay claim
So beautiful to be free from my name
Was so beautiful how could we not believe
So beautiful how could we not believe
How could we not believe
Having lived through times like these
So beautiful how could we not believe
So beautiful how could we not believe
So beautiful how could we not believe
